My friend Spike over at Brains on Fire got to thinking about the concept of borderless company, which got me thinking about the real estate industry.
If a borderless company is one that doesn’t try to control the message and tell customers who they should be and what they should stand for, then the real estate industry is the Berlin Wall.
Visit www.agentsonline.net and you will find a community of agents and brokers who are mostly hostile to the idea of a national MLS and a MLS system that is open to everyone. If they where listening, the real estate industry would hear consumers asking for more and more accurate information. Exactly what a national and open MLS could provide.
The problem is most agents and brokers feel that they “own” the listings (past and present) and by giving consumers free and unfettered access to this information would leave them no way of enticing new clients.
With this attitude, they are probably right.
