I finally read the Freakonimics book you have come to love. It was really thought provoking and I am glad I read it. However, I have a major concern that I feel is being lost in this fight agains the traditional real estate market model. If we lessen the agents role will the consumer be vulnerable to unfair business practices. I know you and the DOJ say that is happening right now but will it continue in a different form? Just a thought, but would I do my job for less money? Would my clients be rewarded enough of my time to properly serve their interests and need?

IE: I had a listing of mine under contract where Saturday night before a Monday close I'm told the buyers won't be there because they are divorcing. Needless to say that my seller had my full attention and I even sacrificed a piece of my fee to ensure we reached closing. I protected my client and knew what to do. When these things happen in the future, will buyers and sellers know how to handle the [fires]???

So, in all this screaming about fairness, are we going to be paid for our time or not? You say this arguement is about freedom of MLS information, etc... but it always ends up talking about how we are screwing our clients financially.

Signed,
Confused and a little peeved

Jason, it is time for you to stop drinking the NAR cool-aid.

The argument is about big real estate brokers obstructing other real estate brokers who are using the Internet to serve their customers, and who are developing innovative business models that take advantage of Internet technology.

I would think that an agent such as yourself who, judging by your example, understands and embraces your role as a fiduciary would understand that if everyone had access to the same data then the only way to differentiate ones self would be by the value and service provide.

I think Levitt and myself are mostly in agreement, agents provide a valuable service. I would go farther to say that a good agent provides a very valuable service, one that is worth paying for.

Provide a truly exceptional and valuable service and you will make plenty of money; in any industry.
